Novice Operators

Operating a forklift truck is a specialised skill. Many accidents are caused by untrained drivers operating trucks in ignorance of the special conditions that apply to forklifts. This course is designed for beginners with little or no experience, who receive a certificate of qualification at the end of the course, provided they achieve the required standard in the theoretical and practical tests.

Objectives
On completion of the course participants will be able to:

Operate a forklift truck safely, reducing the risk of injury to operators and pedestrians
Use safe operating habits
Explain the differences between a forklift truck and a car
Explain the consequences of taking certain kinds of chances
Load and unload safely
Refuel/recharge forklift trucks safely
Handle awkward loads

Conversion Training

HSA guidance outlines that drivers trained on one type of truck require conversion training if they are to operate a different type of truck. This course is designed to equip an operator with a valid operators certificate on a particular type of forklift (e.g. Counterbalance or Reach), with the skills necessary to drive the alternative truck.

Objectives
On completion of the course participants will be able to:

Operate the lift truck safely, reducing the risk of injury to operators and pedestrians
Use safe operating habits
Explain the differences between types of lift truck
Load and unload safely
Handle awkward loads
Elementary driving
Explanation, demonstration and guided practice in the correct procedures to adopt when operating the fork lift truck
Checking the truck
Correct operating procedures
Safe working loads
Practical competence testing


Who should attend?
Drivers with certificates for one truck type i.e. counterbalance or reach, who are now required to operate the other type (whichever is applicable)

Pre-course Requirements
All participants attending this course must forward a copy of their current valid Forklift Operators Certificate to CRS with booking form.

Assessment/Certification
Participants complete a theoretical and practical exam.
On successful completion of the exam participants are awarded a Forklift Operators Conversion Certificate.

**Certificates are valid for three years and must be refreshed before that time is up**

Experienced Operators

This course is designed for experienced operators who are familiar with the steering characteristics of the lift truck and have the ability to manoeuvre both forward and reverse in a confined area. They should also be experienced in load handling functions. Certificates are awarded to participants at the end of the course, provided they achieve the required standard in the theoretical and practical tests.

Objectives
On completion of this course participants will be able to:

Operate a fork lift truck safely, reducing the risk of injury to operators and pedestrians
Use safe operating habits
Explain the consequences of taking certain kinds of chances
Load and unload safely
Refuel/recharge fork lifts safely
Handle awkward loads
Introduction to course

Safe operating practices and safety video
Elementary driving
Explanation, demonstration and guided practice in the correct procedures to adopt when driving a fork lift truck

Who should attend?
Experienced operators who are familiar with the steering characteristics of the lift truck and have the ability to manoeuvre both forward and reverse in a confined area. They should be also be experienced in load handling functions.

Pre-course Requirements
Operators must have at least one year`s recent experience operating a lift truck and/or hold a Forklift Operator`s Certificate which has expired.

Assessment/Certification
Participants complete a theoretical and practical exam.
On successful completion of the exam participants are awarded a Forklift Operators Experienced Certificate.

Refresher Training

Regular refresher training is recommended to keep Fork Lift Truck operators safe and to sharpen operator techniques. HSA guidance on forklift trucks states that operators should undergo refresher training to keep them from developing bad habits, or if and when their work practices change. This course is suitable for experienced operators who require a refresher course.

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

Who should attend?
Certified Drivers who have had adequate basic training should consider attendance at this course. They should have previously been certified but now require their skills to be updated, due to long intervals of time between operating lift trucks, or changes in work practices have occurred, or there is evidence of deterioration in operating performance.
All participants attending this course must forward a copy of their current certificate to CRS with booking form.

Valid Forklift Operators Certificate

Assessment/Certification
Participants complete a theoretical and practical exam.
On successful completion of the exam participants are awarded a Forklift Operators Refresher Certificate.
